They are covered by the too big rubber piece of crap that is this weak impersonation of a cover This cover is a true POS. It is 8 sizes too big and half of the buttons do not come through.
I simply had to get a razor blade and cut out a hole in order for the ball to move smoothly. I liked this rubber case in that it fit my blackberry well. It's cheap enough to get another which I will be doing. After a few months, the elasticity on this wore out, but overall, it held up well enough. However, the rubber portion that covers the ball is annoying. It severely limits the mobility of the ball.
I had to cut out a section with a razor so that I could still use the ball. However, the rubber actually covers the roller ball on my phone. It's probably worth it for the $ though. I wanted a phone cover that was really black, and they didn't offer one at the cell phone stores near my house (the closest was charcoal grey). This phone cover is really black, which is a plus.
